Hot Under the Collar

It's not just the heat of competition, but the heat of the season. Summer for the NHRA Division 4 drag racers is always hot. Southern states have to perform high quality passes under the high demand of slippy tracks and timing programs gone awry. The story of how one gets through the summer months of racing down South is to go with the flow and bring along a couple of pop-up shelters to keep the sun off the back of your neck.

Nitrousfitz Racing has been performing well under the pressure. If it not for the great driving of our 4550 Super Pro dragster the season might seem to be slipping away. But that's just because it's Summer down here and the long break from the heat is about to commence. With a third of the season behind us, here's where the competitors stand.

Next weekend will be the third bracket race for the Super Pro dragster. Having gone three rounds in both races at the last meet, R. Walsh maintains her second point ranking for the Houston Raceway Park bracket team. The upcoming race could easily be won by this consistent package of car, engine, and driver.

TS46 has had the motor and transmission out now for 3 weeks. Sending the motor in after the last competition has meant that the crew has been busy revamping the second stage of nitrous. A poor transmission tail housing created a crack that lead to a loss of vacuum in the engine and a lean condition developed into blown head gaskets. The transmission is back and we wait for the engine to be deliver in the coming days. July 25th will be the next divisional race in Baytown, Texas where both sportsman entrants will be ready to take the win light from start to finish.

TD4200 also has has problems related to the Powerglide transmission. The talk around the shop has been whether to have a long time friend begin to do the rebuild instead of the current vendor. Looks like we'll be getting the extra special treatment for a while as that decision has been made and it is hoped that those problems are behind us.

So, this season is much like any other. While last year saw a big win in the beginning of the year, it looks like all the stars will be aligned for Team Nitrousfitz Racing once the cooler weather sets in and we get to take a July win into the second half of the season.

Who's hot under the collar? Not me. Just keep the this Texas summer sun from baking my neck and everything will be fine.

P.S.
